Ornamental iron fence and entries

Ornamental iron belongs at the house yard, the drive, and the front of the place, anywhere you want a clean fence you can see through. We build iron fence and entry panels together with the gate and the rest of the line, so the front of the place looks like one job. Priced on site. Call or text 254-716-5760.

What ornamental iron fence is

Close-up of a metal fence

Ornamental iron, often called wrought iron, is steel pickets between horizontal rails, set on steel posts. These days it's almost always welded steel, painted or powder-coated, not true hand-forged wrought iron. It's strong, it lasts, and you can see right through it.

On acreage it shows up in three spots: around the house yard, along the drive near the house, and as decorative panels on each side of the entry gate.

Where iron fits

Iron goes where people look close. Fence the house yard in iron and the dogs and kids stay in without losing the view of the pasture. Iron wing panels at the entry frame the gate and dress up the front of the place.

Out in the pasture, iron is the wrong tool. It costs more than pipe and isn't built for stock leaning on it. The usual pairing is iron at the house and pipe fence everywhere else.

  • House yard: open, clean, and dog-tight with close pickets.
  • The drive: iron along the last stretch to the house.
  • Entry panels: wings on each side of the main gate.

Style, height, and picket spacing

You'll choose height, picket spacing, the top (flat, spear, or pressed points), and the finish. Close pickets, or a tighter section at the bottom, keep small dogs in. Taller panels suit the entry. Around a house yard, waist to chest high is common.

On sloped ground, panels can be stepped or racked to follow the grade. When we walk it, we'll show you how each one looks on your ground.

  • Height and picket spacing.
  • Flat top, spear, or pressed points.
  • Color and finish.
  • Stepped or racked panels on slopes.
  • Matching walk gates and drive gates.

Steel, posts, and finish

Panels are steel pickets and rails. Posts are square or round steel, set in the ground and plumbed so the panels line up. The finish keeps rust off, so it matters as much as the steel. We'll go over finish options before we price.

Entry panels and gates carry more weight and catch more wind than yard panels, so they get heavier posts.

How it's built

We walk the house yard, the drive, and the entry with you, lay out the line and gates, and price it on site. Posts go in on a string line, plumb and to depth. Then the panels go on, the gates get hung, and any field welds get touched up.

Footage, gates, ground, and weather set the timeline. We'll give you a schedule with the quote.

What moves the price

Priced on site. Here's what drives it:

  • Footage and height.
  • Picket style and spacing.
  • How many gates, and how big.
  • Slope, rock, and where the fence meets the house or other fence.

Gates, openers, and the entry

Open farm gate leading to a dirt track through a grass field

Iron fence and the entry gate go together. We build ranch gates and entries and install solar or hardwired openers, so an iron drive gate with wing panels opens from a remote or keypad like any other entry.

Where iron at the house meets pipe or wire in the pasture, we join them at a solid post. The front of the place, the house yard, and the pasture fence all get laid out as one plan.

Repair and upkeep

Iron lasts as long as its finish. Touch up chips and scratches before rust starts, and check gate hinges and latches now and then.

We straighten or replace bent panels and posts, re-weld broken joints, re-hang sagging gates, and repaint. See fence repair and rebuilds.

Questions about ornamental iron fence

Iron or pipe at the entry?

Both work. Iron looks more formal. Pipe looks more ranch. Some entries run a pipe gate on pipe posts, others put iron wing panels with an iron or pipe gate. We'll sketch both on your entry.

Can an iron gate have an opener?

Yes. We install solar and hardwired openers on iron and pipe gates. See ranch gates and openers.

Will it keep my dogs in?

For most dogs, yes, with close pickets or a tighter section at the bottom and the fence tight to the ground. Tell us how big your dogs are when we walk it.

How much does iron fence cost?

Priced on site. Footage, height, picket style, gates, and ground all move the number.

Do I need a permit?

Depends where the place sits. Inside Weatherford or Aledo city limits, the city requires a fence permit. Unincorporated Parker County doesn't issue building permits, though the county does regulate septic and floodplain work.

Anywhere else, check with the city or county before we start. We'll ask where the place sits when we walk the line, so it's settled before the first post goes in.

How long does it take?

That comes down to footage, gates, ground, and weather. You'll get a schedule with the quote.

Should the whole place be iron?

Usually not. Iron costs more than pipe and isn't built for stock leaning on it. Put iron at the house yard and the entry, and pipe fence on the pastures and road.

Can the iron match the entry gate?

Yes. We lay out the wing panels, posts, and gate together, so picket style, height, and finish line up across the front of the place.

What upkeep does iron need?

Touch up the finish where it chips and check the gate hardware. For repaint and weld repair, see fence repair.
